EIF and Future Finance sign ERASMUS+ Master Student Loan guarantee supporting mobile master students

  •
    Date: 21 October 2016
  • Ground-breaking agreement will provide £30m of loans to UK and European master’s students.
  • Partnership with Future Finance is designed to help master’s students access great education

The European Investment Fund (EIF) has selected Future Finance, Europe’s fastest growing provider of student loans, as its UK lending partner for loans to master's students through the Erasmus+ funding programme. This agreement will support GBP 30m (EUR 38.8m) in loans for students moving outside the UK to undertake their master programme in one of the 32 other Erasmus+ Programme Countries, or students from these countries studying in the UK. The student loans will be provided at favourable conditions without requiring any collateral or third party guarantee thanks to the support of the EU and is expected to benefit more than 3,500 master students. The agreement between the EIF and Future Finance is the first of its kind in the UK and the fourth in total to be signed under the Erasmus+ loan guarantee scheme, funded by the European Union and managed by EIF.

EIF Chief Executive, Pier Luigi Gilibert said: “I am pleased to be signing this Erasmus+ guarantee today. The initiative aims to bridge the existing financing gap students are faced with when deciding to pursue a master’s degree in a country other than their own. This signature will help to increase the mobility of students who might become new entrepreneurs in the future.”

“Investment in research, academic and student facilities, technology transfer and to enable student mobility are crucial for European universities. This partnership with Future Finance, who have already funded nearly 5,000 students in the UK in their first two years, builds on the European Investment Bank Group’s strong track record of supporting investment at UK universities, providing more than GBP 2.5 billion for campus, research and student investment over the last decade.” said Jonathan Taylor, European Investment Bank Vice President.

CEO and founder of Future Finance, Brian Norton said: “At Future Finance we are committed to breaking down the financial barriers to higher education. As such, we are thrilled to have been selected by the EIF as its UK partner, ahead of the big banks and other established lending institutions. It is exciting to be involved in this ground-breaking agreement, which will help thousands of ambitious UK and European students access the great education they so thoroughly deserve.”

“It is important students are given the opportunity to move abroad to experience high quality education at great universities and I’m proud that Future Finance can play a part in helping to make that happen.”

Thanks to EU support, this Erasmus+ guarantee scheme allows EIF to provide capped guarantees and counter-guarantees to financial intermediaries which in turn grant loans to students who will move to undertake a master's degree in another country taking part in the Erasmus+ programme.

Master's students who are interested in obtaining finance can get further information at: www.futurefinance.com/uk/pages/eif/

EIF has launched a Call for Expression of Interest targeting financial institutions and other intermediaries which provide finance to mobile master students. Interested financial institutions can find further information on the programme and application process on EIF’s website at www.eif.org.

Over the last decade the European Investment Bank Group has provided more than GBP 2.4 billion for campus investment at 28 UK universities in recent years, technology transfer and spin-off investment and student mobility programmes. This has included technology transfer investment by UCL Enterprises and Imperial Innovations, new campus developments at Swansea, UCL and the University of Belfast, as well as transformational schemes in Newcastle, Oxford, Birmingham and Leicester. UK universities have received nearly a quarter of EIB lending for the sector in Europe in recent years.

About EIF

The European Investment Fund (EIF) is part of the European Investment Bank Group. Its central mission is to support Europe's micro, small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) by helping them to access finance. EIF designs and develops venture and growth capital, guarantees and microfinance instruments which specifically target this market segment. In this role, EIF fosters EU objectives in support of innovation, research and development, entrepreneurship, growth, and employment.

About Erasmus + Master Loans

The Erasmus+ programme, of which the Erasmus+ Master Student Loan Guarantee Facility is part, is the biggest mover of students in the EU, with over 300.000 higher education students and staff studying, working or undertaking a traineeship in another European country every year. It is managed by the European Commission's Directorate General for Education and Culture (DG EAC) and its executive agency. Erasmus+ Master Loans are currently available to mobile Master students in all 33 Erasmus+ Programme Countries through Financial Intermediaries in Spain, France and now also UK.

About Future Finance lending

Future Finance, the UK’s first specialist student lender, provides competitive tailored loans to students in the UK and Germany when government loans and bursaries are not available or enough to cover the cost of higher education. Future Finance is facilitating access to education through its proprietary lending platform, enabling it to lend to students who in many cases would not be able to obtain loans from banks.

Future Finance also provides loans to undergraduates and postgraduates of between £1,000 and £40,000 each academic year to help them pay for tuition costs and living expenses. Loan periods are for ten years after graduation although borrowers can settle early at any time, with no early repayment charges, and reduce the amount of interest that they pay overall.

Future Finance is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
