On 6th May, EIF hosted a presentation where the key-note speaker, Prof. Konstantin Novoselov, a 36-year-old Russian-British physicist, delivered a speech on his groundbreaking experiments on “Graphene”, a two-dimensional crystal made from graphite, conducted with his doctoral advisor, Prof. Andre Geim. Their research, which earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010, shows that its unique properties make Graphene a highly efficient conductor of heat and electricity and a suitable material for the manufacture of innovative electronics, with a broad range of potential applications.
Prof. Novoselov’s work has been supported by the UMIP Premier Fund, created by the University of Manchester in partnership with MTI Partners, in order to invest in high growth businesses emerging from the University’s research base. EIF is a cornerstone investor in the UMIP Premier Fund under the EU CIP programme.
EIF’s Technology Transfer operations aim to bridge the gap between research and the market and this investment addresses the shortage of early-stage finance for academic spin-outs, focusing primarily on proof-of-principle, seed and post-seed investments in all areas of technology (engineering sciences, physical sciences and medical and life sciences).
